DIY Dip Dyed Flannels

This time of year all I ever want to put on when I get dressed for the day is a cozy flannel, even when the weather is far from cold enough for it. Whether I button it up with a pair of boyfriend jeans or tie it around the waist for some extra flare with a tee, give me a soft plaid shirt in the fall and I'm content as can be. That's why I thought it would be fun to add a custom touch to some old (or new and cheap in this case) flannels. It's SUPER easy - just make sure you wear an apron or clothes you don't care about and work in a space like your kitchen counter that can handle a splatter or two of dye. Here's how you do it...

What You'll Need:- Bucket of water- Salt- Fabric dye in the color of your choice, mixed according to the instructions on the package. I used Dylon brand in navy.- Flannels or whatever pieces you're dip dying- Hair ties or rubber bands (1 per garment)1. Wrap the hair tie or rubber band around the part of the garment that you'd like the dye to stop at. Be sure to include the sleeves if you want them to be dyed as well.

2. Pour the dye into the bucket of water and mix it to blend. Dampen the part of the garment you're going to dye (I did the bottom half) with water. This will make the dye soak in more evenly. Then place the bottom of the garment(s) into the bucket of dye so they are submerged almost to the hair tie. Let soak for 10 minutes.

3. Pull the garment(s) partially out so about a 3rd of the dyed part is now out of the dye mixture. Let soak for another 10 minutes. Then pull out a few more inches so now only the bottom 3rd is submerged. Let sit for 15-20 min.

4. Thoroughly rinse out all the excess by running the dyed part under the water faucet. Once it's rinsed enough so the water runs clear, squeeze out the excess water. Wash the garments alone in the washing machine on cold (I may have thrown a couple of black things in with them so as not to waste the load but make sure whatever you put in there is as dark or darker than the dye).
