13 Staples Every Girl Needs

Whenever I'm working with a client to update their wardrobe, there are always a few key things that keep consistently showing up on the "to buy" list. These are the pieces that I feel are über important for everyone's day-to-day needs, no matter how your personal style is unique from the next girl. There is a version of each of them for every woman, and all of them are lifesavers when you need an outfit pick-me-up. So if you're looking to streamline your wardrobe and invest in some solid staples this year, this post is for you. Here goes...

Leather jacket - Contrary to popular belief, leather jackets aren't just for edgy girls. There's a leather jacket for everyone. In my research, I have found that Veda makes some of the best out there. Not only are they on the more affordable end of the leather jacket market, but they are also some of the dreamiest fitting, plus they come in so many different colors and leather textures.

Everyday ankle boots - Whether you're a heel or a flats girl, a good pair of everyday ankle boots are key for your wardrobe three seasons out of the year. They go with everything from jeans to flirty dresses. Whatever neutral you choose, grab yourself a pair and you'll wear them nonstop for years to come.

Splurge sunnies - I'm a sunnies girl. They're always the last piece I add to an outfit and I always feel extra fabulous the minute I throw them on. I believe that every girl should save for a pair they're obsessing over and go for it.

Oversized watch - These days it's all about the mens watch, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere any time soon. I like this look because on those days when you don't feel like piling on the jewelry, the watch makes a statement all on its own.

Pointy pumps - While platform pumps were all the rage a few years ago, the look has gone a step more elegant. The pointy toe is elongating to the leg, timeless, and perfect for boyfriend jeans and red carpet gowns alike. The BB's by Manolo Blahnik are at the top of the list, along with Louboutin Pigalle's.

Perfect t-shirt - You may have to go on an epic search for your own perfect tee, but when you find it, buy five of em. I have found that you get what you pay for in this category, and if you're nice to your tees, they'll be nice to you (so, hand wash the drapey expensive ones).

Show stopping cocktail dress - It may seem frivolous when you find it, but you'll be so glad to have it time and time again. Ideally, it's one you can sass up for a girls night out or class up for a wedding.

Ripped skinny jeans - A good pair of ripped jeans is bound to be a daily favorite in your wardrobe. Of course they'll pair well with that favorite tee and ankle boots, but you can also have fun dressing them up with a flowy top and blazer.

Fedora - The fedora may seem like a fleeting trend, but it's far from that. Variations of the style go centuries back, and are all going strong. There are so many different kinds that you can undoubtedly find a version that's uniquely you without feeling like you're falling victim to a fad.

Dressy cross body bag - While we all love a pretty clutch, the cross body is a dream purse because it allows you to be hands free when you most need it - weddings, girls nights out, flea markets, etc. The perfect investment will take you to a quick lunch or a black tie event, and give you the choice to tuck/remove the strap and go handheld, or wear it on your shoulder without dressing down your look while you shake a hand in one, and have a cocktail in the other.

Black blazer - This is the number one piece I tell all my clients to buy. It works with a tee and sneakers on a Sunday, over a dress for an event, and everything in between. Helmut Lang's are hands down my favorite.

Statement glam necklace - This is another one that may feel like a frivolous expenditure but once you take the leap, you'll be amazed at what it does for your wardrobe, even with a t-shirt and jeans.

White Converse sneakers - Whether you're a low or high tops girl, there's nothing like a fresh pair of white Converse. They are always in style no matter what, totally affordable, and perfect for any casual day.
